Rainwater Collection

Millions of gallons of water go waste during rainfalls, for the lack of a rainwater collection device. Also known as rain water harvesting devices, they comprise of different components, such as filters, gutters, tanks, etc. The water that is collected this way can be used for a variety of purposes such as washing clothes or cars, gardening and after ensuring that the water is pure enough, it can even be used drinking. What is more you can make a rainwater collection device on your own too. If you can do accurate laser cutting and can source a few different types of materials required for the different components, you can attempt this do-it-yourself (DIY) project.

Rainwater collection process

The entire process of rainwater collection is easy to understand. The rainwater runoff is collected in a system of gutters, that are placed just below the roof. The gutters are created using accurate laser cutting machines. The rainwater enters the gutters from the catchment area, i.e., the roof. It is then carried through conduits consisting of pipes into water tanks. Accurate laser cutting expertise is also required for creating the network of conduits. The rainwater runoff enters after passing through a mesh, which stops dirt particles from entering into the system. A key part of the device is known as the 'first flush valve'. This valve is there to ensure that the first spell of rain is not collected. This is because the first spell of rainwater runoff is known to contain pollutants. The rainwater enters a water filter, where it is purified before it enters the storage tank.

Why rainwater is important?

Many environmental experts believe that the next world war will be fought over water. This is how precious water is becoming as a commodity. With the world population increasing by the day and with rising levels of pollution, water has already become a scarce commodity in many parts of the world. This explains why it is important that we don't waste a resource such as rainwater. Here are some key reasons why you should collect rainwater.

1. Rainwater just falls from the sky. You need not spend a penny. It is absolutely free. Moreover, installation of a rainwater collection system does not cost a fortune. It is also an investment that will last for a long time.

2. The next time it rains observe how plants appear much greener than usual. This is because rainwater is a clean source of water, which contains a variety of vital minerals that are good for plants, as well microscopic organisms that reside on or nearby the plants.

3. Rainwater also replenishes groundwater and helps feed other large water bodies such as lakes and rivers.

4. The presence of vital ingredients in rainwater help in improving soil quality.

Wide spread use

Wherever water is a scarce resource, rainwater collection devices help. This is no rocket science. These days with rapid urbanization, water has become a precious commodity in a majority of large cities too. These are the places where rainwater collection devices are playing a key role in ensuring that this often-neglected natural resource is stored and used.
